UCF safety Jakob Gude is no longer with the program, opting out of the remainder of the season to preserve a year of eligibility and enter the transfer portal, a source told UCFSports.com.

Gude traveled with the Knights to No. 6 Texas Tech this past weekend, which would have marked his fifth game of the year. According to a source, he informed coaches prior to kickoff that he would not play, electing to maintain his redshirt.

A Class of 2024 signee, Gude has primarily contributed on special teams since arriving on campus. This fall, he appeared in four games, mostly on kickoff coverage, but did not record a stat. He appeared in a total of seven defensive snaps during UCF’s blowout win against North Carolina A&T on Sept. 6.

The Fairburn, Ga., native was considered a major recruiting win for former head coach Gus Malzahn and his staff. A four-star prospect out of Langston Hughes High School, Gude chose UCF over Alabama, Florida and others, but wasn’t able to crack the defensive rotation during his two seasons in Orlando.

With Gude preserving his redshirt, he will enter the transfer portal with three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Another former four-star safety, Jaylen “AP” Heyward, opted out earlier this season.

The college football transfer portal officially opens for a single 15-day window on Jan. 2 and closes Jan. 16.
