Just five games into the 2025 campaign, Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia has a change in the role of Head Football Coach. That position previously been occpued since the start of the 2023 season by Kendal Jefferson. Stepping in as the Head Coach, for now, is a veteran of another sport, many around the city know quite well.

Granby Head Girls Basketball Coach Jonathan Wilson will serve as the Head Football Coach of the Comets, the school’s Athletic Director, Chris Harris, confirmed to VirginiaPreps.com without specifing exactly why.

“We cannot comment on personnel matters,” Harris noted. “Jonathan Wilson is the temporary Head Coach.”

Wilson spent 23 years coaching at his alma mater – Norview High School – in Norfolk. With the Pilots, he went 133-92 overall in nine years as Head Boys Basketball Coach from 2007-16, then spent eight seasons as the Head Girls Basketball Coach there and led the program to multiple State Tournament appearances.

Coaching football is not something entirely new to Wilson either. In 2010, after a couple of games, he became the interim Head Football Coach at Norview, replacing Tom Long.

Prior to Jefferson’s arrival, Granby had fallen on hard times on the gridrion. The Comets had gone 3-39 overall in the five seasons from 2018-22.

Jefferson led Granby to a 9-0 start in 2024 before falling to eventual State Champ Maury 55-0 and to Warwick by a 35-7 count in the opening round of the Region 5B playoffs. His record over three seasons was 16-11. That 9-0 start marked the program’s best sincee the perfect 11-0 title winning season of 1966 under Bill Ralph.

It is unclear if Jefferson will return to the lead the Comets again at some point.

The 2025 Comets have struggled, getting outscored 240-72 in opening 0-5. They look for their first win of the year on Friday, October 3rd at home at Powhatan Field against visiting Manor (2-3).
