It’s part of the Great American Rivalry Series at Darling Stadium, where the Hampton Crabbers take on the reigning four-time State Champion Phoebus Phantoms in a matchup between arguably the two most storied programs in Virginia High School Football history.

Hampton has won 17 VHSL State Championships, most out of anyone, with Phoebus right behind them with 11.

In a rare Thursday night matchup, the Crabbers put forth a running clock victory over Phoebus by a count of 43-7 to end their 10-game losing streak in the head-to-head series. Phoebus had eliminated Hampton from the playoffs each of the past two years; 56-8 in 2023 and 37-3 in 2024.

Hampton (6-1) racked up 403 total yards of offense with 214 on the ground and 189 through the air via junior QB Marcus Chapman. The third quarter was a showcase for senior Casey Lassiter and junior Davion Perry.

Lassiter broke off a 58-yard TD run in the third period on a night when he rushed for 90 yards on 11 attempts recorded a 23-yard reception, four solo tackles, one for loss, and forced a fumble, which Perry recovered and returned 39 yards for a touchdown. Perry also had three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown to go with two interceptions.

Phoebus (3-3) was held to just 133 total yards of offense, including a mere 17 yards rushing on 19 attempts. They turned the football over four times on the night, all in the second half. It was the most lopsided loss for the Phantoms since being blanked by Oscar Smith 42-0 in the 2021 regular season finale.
