Maury 3-Peats in Class 5

The Maury Commodores defeated Highland Springs 25-7 in the Class 5 State Championship to capture their third straight state title, finishing the 2025 campaign 14-1 overall. It pushes their winning streak to 41 games against Virginia opponents.

Maury Fast Start

The Commodores had 13 points on the board in the 1st three minutes of the game. 

Matt Williams returned the opening kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown, and Dominick Everette ran 42 yards up the middle of the Springers’ defense for a touchdown with 9:33 to go in the 1st quarter.

Near the end of he 1st quarter, Williams and Everette connected for a 64-yard touchdown strike. Williams was all alone behind the Springer defense, and Maury led 19-0 with 1:09 to go.

Neither team scored in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

2nd half

The Springers control the clock in the 2nd quarter and the 1st half of the 3rd quarter. They were stopped on 1st-and-goal after taking over six minutes off the clock to start the 3rd quarter.

Highland Springs finally got on the scoreboard with a short touchdown run by quarterback Antoine Richardson. The extra point makes the score 19-7 with 10:23 left in the game.

Richardson left the game in the 1st half with a shoulder injury but returned in the 2nd half. The Springers were also missing running back Eric Byrd, who was in uniform but didn’t have a carry.

Any momentum the Springers generated was quickly squashed with a Maury touchdown a few minutes later. Two long runs by TayShawn Branche set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Javonti Hughes. Maury leads Highland Springs 25-7 with 9:21 to go in the 4th quarter.

Highland Springs was stopped on downs with 4:03 remaining, effectively ending any chance for a Springer comeback.

Williams finished with three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Tayshawn Branche finished with 164yards on 13 carries. Everette completed 12 of 21 passing for 159 yards and two touchdown passes while adding 47 yards on six carries.

Rodney Hicks finished with 145 yards on 17 carries for the Springers’ offense. JJ Archer had six tackles and a sack, and he blocked a kick. Jalen Padmore and Zamar Bledsoe had interceptions, including one at the very end of the game.
