In today’s competitive recruiting landscape, the difference between receiving an athletic scholarship could be the level of training. Quarterbacks coach Tony Freeman has provided individualized training for over 15 years and now runs QBArchitects, a quarterback training academy in the Hampton Roads area.

Freeman’s roots are in the Hampton Roads area. He played quarterback at Hampton High School, served as a high school quarterbacks coach at Warwick High School, and worked as a college quarterbacks coach at the Apprentice School in Newport News for five years. Freeman got his start as a youth football coach while also training athletes part-time. He landed his first coaching job as the running backs coach under Stan Sexton at Warwick High School, and later became the quarterbacks coach under Juan Jackson in 2009.

Power 5 Clients

Freeman’s current clients include the top quarterbacks in the 757 area code, all of whom have Power 5 offers. Nansemond River Senior Tyrell Grant Jr. has been with Freeman since he started the quarterback Academy. Grant will play football in the ACC after committing to Syracuse University.

Junior Lonnie Andrews III helped Oscar Smith win a State title at the highest classification, and he has offers from Virginia Tech, Virginia, Boston College, and Syracuse. Junior Kevin Parker from Denbigh High School has offers from Wake Forest, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Sophomore Keenan Carter Jr. has a Syracuse offer and interest from Oklahoma.

QBArchitects Academy Begins

Freeman says he started his business around 2015, when he transitioned from a hobby to a full-fledged business with a schedule. He says he began to receive more notoriety after the success on the football field for some of his clients.

“I was training all the top high school quarterbacks in the area,” Freeman said. “All of the guys were first team and second team All-Region. D. J. Nunn (Hampton) was first team All-Region at the time. Navarro Price, (who) played at Bethel, was 1st team All-Region the following year. Tzion Lucas from Warwick was 2nd team All-Region. Once I started getting those guys with accolades, that’s when business started booming. I started getting more clients after that.”

Sessions

The QBArchitects training academy offers three packages, each involving 3, 5, or 10 sessions. For the three-session package, Freeman says training is held once a week. For five sessions, Freeman recommends twice a week, but accepts once a week. For 10 sessions, he recommends two sessions per week.

During the off-season, the sessions usually run in the afternoons or evenings. During the summertime, he has both morning and afternoon sessions. However, since the season is about to begin, he is only doing weekend training sessions.

QBArchitects has teamed up with Birdspeed Sports Academy, a training program run by Wide Receivers coach Darrius Jones. BirdSpeed provides receivers during the training sessions, and the two groups help each other. The quarterbacks have high-level receivers to throw to, and the receivers have D1 quarterbacks to work with. Maury receiver Matt Williams, who has offers from Maryland, Old Dominion, and Charlotte, worked out with both groups, which shows the partnership.

Tune-up Sundays

The quarterback sessions do not stop when the football season starts. Freeman continues his sessions during the season to address any concerns the prospect may have.

“I have what we call Tune-up Sundays on Sundays, where we focus on the game from Friday night,” Freeman said. “We work on whatever they struggled with or had issues with that night. They come in on Sunday and work on those throws, reviewing film to help them improve throughout the season.”
