VHSL Football Top Tens - Entering 10-2-25 Games

We’re down to 35 undefeated teams left in Virginia High School Football on the public school scene as we head into the final weekend of September (see team-by-team and region-by-region results here).

The most eyebrow-raising team dropping from the ranks of the unbeaten was Phoebus. The four-time defending State Champion Phantoms saw their 51-game winning streak dashed in a surprising 34-20 loss to Warwick in the rain last Saturday at John B. Todd Stadium in Newport News (read more about it in Will Garlick’s game recap here) as junior tailback Terius Brown rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns.

As for the most exciting finish of the past week, it without a doubt came in Fredericksburg, where Colonial Forge erased a 13-point deficit and edged Commonwealth District rival North Stafford, 27-26, on a six-yard touchdown pass from Brock Brimhall to Jeremiah Wise on the final play. It kept the Eagles unblemished, while it marked the second loss on the season – the other coming to Battlefield – where the Wolverines were beaten on the game’s final play.

Also knocked from the undefeated group that dropped from 50 to 35 were King’s Fork, which fell to Oscar Smith 42-14 (more in the game blog here) as well as Lafayette, which got knocked off by Poquoson 10-7 in overtime.

Class 2 has the largest representation of undefeated teams still as the calendar turns from September to October with nine. That number will certainly dwindle later this month when Buckingham and Central-Lunenburg collide in a James River District showdown (Oct. 17), while Union and Ridgeview are set to face off in a huge Mountain 7 District matchup (Oct. 10).

Below you can find the latest spreadsheet table + rankings for all six classifications that include hyperlinks to our in-depth team previews if you happened to miss any of them from our countdown during the month of August.
