Remaining are 31 unbeaten squads. That number will continue to shrink as we move through October.

It’s rare for the Class 6 and Class 5 Top Tens to stay completely the same from the prior week, unchanged, but that’s the case. In fact, only one team fell out of any of the Top Ten rankings completely and that was Staunton in Class 3 by virtue of their 13-7 loss to the Little Giants of Waynesboro. Jumping in was Northside, which beat Class 1 contender Rappahannock 18-7 and now plays host to William Byrd (4-1) in a key Region 3D matchup.

There are quite a few high-profile games on the docket this week. Perhaps no matchup has more spice to it than the showdown in Coeburn between the undefeated Eastside Spartans (6-0) and visiting Rye Cove Eagles (5-1), who are defending Region 1D Champs [watch on NFHS Network here]. After a comfortable 40-8 regular season triumph, Rye Cove won last year’s regional title matchup in a 26-20 thriller.

Another monster showdown happens in Region 4C, where Loudoun Valley at 5-0 visits 6-0 Loudoun County. It’s the first 5-0 start for the Vikings of Loudoun Valley since 1988. The Captain of Loudoun County won last year’s matchup in an overtime classic, 17-14 [watch on NFHS Network here].

That’s not the only undefeated battle taking place either. In Thursday night action in Southwest Virginia, the Union Bears put their 6-0 record on the line against the visiting Ridgeview Wolfpack, who come in at 5-0 and try to break a three-game losing skid in the series between Mountain 7 District rivals [watch on NFHS Network here].

Let’s also salute one of the most successful coaches in Virginia as Brad Bradley of Heritage-Lynchburg achieved his 250th career victory when his Pioneers turned back visiting Thomas Jefferson of Richmond, 25-7 last Friday night. Bradley’s Pioneers have won four in a row since the 33-14 season-opening loss at Bridgeport (WV).

Next in line for that milestone win of No. 250 is probably Lake Taylor’s Hank Sawyer, who like Bradley, has seen his team get on a run with four straight victories to move their record to 5-1 overall. Sawyer has 241 career wins, all at the helm of the Titans in Norfolk.
