Some streaks have come to an end, while others continue on as we get ready for the second full weekend of September action in this 2025 Virginia High School League football season.

In Class 6, Oscar Smith suffered its first season-opening shutout loss when they were beaten 17-0 at Washington, D.C. power Gonzaga, but the Tigers responded nicely with a 24-6 road victory over Warwick at John B. Todd Stadium in Newport News.

To open its campaign, Battlefield had to overcome a 13-point fourth quarter deficit and slipped by North Stafford in a possible Region 6B playoff preview on a night when their starting quarterback – University of Richmond commit Calum O’Shea – sustained a season-ending injury. In his place, Ethan Stowell went from backup to starting QB and helped the Bobcats prevail 14-13, then followed that up with a victory over Mountain View to push the regular season winning streak to 45 games for the Bobcats.

Also notching a 14-13 comeback win were the two-time defending Class 5 State Champion Maury Commodores in their recent battle at Varina, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 4. Just one week prior, the Commodores suffered a hard-fought 24-20 loss at Cardinal Gibbons in North Carolina. This time, however, they were able to nudge in front thanks to the eventual game-winning touchdown from receiver and William & Mary commit Jahvon Wiggins on a night when he made five receptions for 160 yards.

A team that suffered its last loss to Maury in the State Semis back in December is Green Run, now winners of 45 consecutive games over Beach District opponents in the regular season. That streak is at 52 when including the postseason matches against Virginia Beach teams. The Stallions might not get a true test from a city foe until September 26th when they travel to Kempsville.

The final squad to open its 2025 VHSL season is Phoebus, who visits Denbigh on September 12th at Todd Stadium. Coach Jeremy Blunt‘s Phantoms enter riding a 49-game winning streak, needing just three more victories to match the state record that the school shares with Riverheads. Can they make it to 53 wins in a row? To do so, they’ll need to beat Highland Springs – still probably annoyed about last year’s 23-7 loss to the Phantoms last September – when the two powerhouse programs collide on October 3rd at Darling Stadium.

Over in Class 3, a couple of the top teams fell to out-of-state powers as Liberty Christian saw its 28-game winning streak halted in a 42-3 loss at Ironton of Ohio in the USA Kickoff Classic. Their Seminole District rival, Heritage-Lynchburg, also opened 0-1 with a 33-14 loss in a weather-shortened clash at 11-time West Virginia State Champ Bridgeport.

The big game in Class 2 comes in Region D this week, where Graham and Union hook up for the 15th meeting all-time with a 16th encounter likely to occur in November. While Graham has won eight of the 14 matchups between the two programs, the G-Men did not fare well in its season opener against neighboring West Virginia rival Bluefield, which doubled them up 20-10. They also remember not too fondly what happened two years ago when Union knocked them off 27-14 to end their 33-game regular season winning streak.

As for Class 1, the top ranked squads in defending Champ Essex, Eastside and Rappahannock are a combined 6-0, all putting up at least 44 points in every contest to date. However, Essex may not find their next opponent that easy as Class 2 member King William rolls into town. That’s a school with the rare distinction in the past decade to actually beat them in consecutive years, doing so as recent as 2018 and 2019 before the Trojans exacted revenge with a 26-13 triumph in 2022.

Below you can find the latest spreadsheet table + rankings for all six classifications that include hyperlinks to our in-depth team previews if you happened to miss any of them from our countdown during the month of August.
