There were a few spine-tingling finishes last weekend that involved some of the top-ranked teams in all of Virginia High School Football.

The first encounter between Dinwiddie and Highland Springs on the gridiron in 13 years did not disappoint for excitement. After falling behind by 14 in the early going, the visiting Generals stormed back and won an overtime classic, 28-21. Stellar performances from Zion Boisseau at QB, Kaevon Wiggins both running and catching the football, plus crurcial defenisve plays from Robert Pettaway helped Dinwiddie stay unbeaten on the year, while the Springers dropped to 1-2 (read more about it in the Game Recap from Danny Lewis here).

Maury avoided a 1-2 start to the season, prevailing in triple-overtime 38-35 over Bishop McNamara from Maryland at Powhatan Field in Norfolk for their home opener. Kicker Charlie McCoy was perfect on all five of his extra point tries and mad the winning field goal from 23 yards out. It marked the first overtime game for the Commodores since 2017 when they outlasted Churchland 24-23 in double-OT (read more about it in our Game Blog here).

Five touchdowns of 30 yards or longer were scored in Eastside’s 36-35 nail-biting triumph over Rural Retreat, where the two Region 1D schools combined for 30 points in the fourth quarter alone. With three seconds to play, junior tailback Keldan Hamilton hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from QB Landon Pannell. Then Hamilton – who ran the rock 23 times for 236 yards and a score – added the winning the two-point conversion for the Spartans.

Eastside is involved in one of a handful of intriguing games this week as they put their 3-0 record on the line at 3-0 Chilhowie. Here are ten other matchups that we’ll be watching extra close this week:

Staunton (3-0) at Alleghany (2-0)
