Football season is complete and now the attention of many prep sports fans around the Commonwealth turns to the hardwood, where several of the defending State Champs have gotten off to slow starts. In fact, the six defending Champs enter play on Tuesday, December 16th with a combined record of 11-10 overall through 21 games.

Out of those six, only George Wythe – the Class 1 State Champ – is still unblemished at 3-0 overall. The next best is Green Run with a 3-1 mark. John Marshall checks in at 2-1, while South Lakes is at .500 with a 3-3 record. Still searching for their first wins are Atlee (0-2) and Spotswood (0-3), both of which were senior-heavy last winter.

Other recent back-to-back state title winners like Hayfield (1-3) and Northside (0-4) have fallen out of the rankings in Class 6 and Class 3, respectively, with slow starts.

No major changes at the top of our rankings with the exception of Class 6, where Westfield drops a spot from the No. 1 line to No. 2. That’s not so much because of their expected lopsided loss to private school powerhouse Paul VI by a count of 87-44, but rather how well Landstown has performed out of the gate. The Eagles have won all six of their games by double-figures to date, averaging 76 points per contest while giving up just 48.7 PPG.

One of the big matchups this week is in the Cardinal District, where a couple of unbeatens square off as Potomac plays host to Gar-Field, who’s enjoying one its best starts in years behind junior JJ Bell (22.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 3.3 SPG).

Below you can see a full expanded chart of the complete Top Tens for all six classifications as it’s our first update since the season tipped off at the beginning of December.
