WVU's Rodney Gallagher starting new youth program
West Virginia wide receiver Rodney Gallagher is finding a way to help kids who experienced a similar situation to himself.
Gallagher, who lost his mom when he was seven, is starting a program to help kids that were in his shoes.
“I lost my mother when I was at the age of seven. It was a very hard time for me, but as I got older, obviously, I started to understand that she wasn’t going to be around anymore,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher hopes the launch of this program is going to be able to help kids who are in the same situation he was in, without a parent, just trying to find a role model in their lives.
“When I lost my mother at the age of seven, I wish I had someone like me as a role model to help me get through the tough times of losing a parent. That’s why I’m starting a program to help kids that lost a parent. I’m going to help mentor them, I’m going to teach them things, and just either go to lunch, play video games with them, and do things they like just to keep their mind off of it,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher has spent two seasons at WVU and has consistently talked about how close his family is since arriving on campus in 2023. In two seasons, he’s tallied 36 catches for 362 yards and three touchdowns.
Gallagher will be launching this program in honor of his mother, hoping to be able to help as many young people as possible along the way.
“This is something I care about a lot, and I want to help as many kids as possible,” Gallagher said.
Gallagher has held other events in the past for the youth, including a football camp in 2024, as well as one in the summer of 2023, prior to his arrival at West Virginia.
