ATHENS, Ga. — Alabama defensive lineman James Smith was flagged for targeting in the third quarter of Saturday’s game at Georgia. Following an official review, the SEC crew assigned to the primetime game in Sanford Stadium believed Smith led with the crown of his helmet, though no flag was thrown on the field. Smith was then disqualified from the road game.

As a result, Smith will have to sit out the first half of next week’s home game vs. Vanderbilt.

Alabama is now down two defensive players who started the game, as linebacker Qua Russaw exited the game with a lower-extremity injury and was ruled out for the rest of the contest.

With Smith disqualified, UA will likely turn to Edric Hill as its next man up at the defensive tackle position. Kelby Collins could also be an option in terms of depth at the interior position.
