Kedon Slovis will look to extend the ASU losing streak to three games when USC plays in Tempe Saturday night.

According to Gardendale coach Chad Eads, Kelby Collins was “made” to play the defensive line. “He’s a guy who started halfway through his freshman year,” Eads told AL.com. “We try to avoid that here, but we just couldn’t keep him off the field. He’s already really improved with his pass rush and the way he uses his hands. His quickness at the line of scrimmage is hard to match. You just don’t see that every day. There are not many that can rush a quarterback and stuff a run like he can. He’s also a very good kid and a good student. It’s been fun going through the process with him.” Away from football, Collins likes playing video games and playing basketball. He plans on majoring in engineering or sports science. His parents are Donchelle and Andrew Collins. His sibling is Drew Collins.

Kelby Collins reminds us of DeMarvin Leal due to his size, positional versatility, play style and functional athleticism. Like Leal, Collins is a big defensive end who could grow into an interior defensive lineman with time. They're both smooth movers who are more of a finesse game at the same stage.

Scholarship traits at the FCS level, with room to climb through continued development and film.

Starter-caliber traits for a Power 4 program (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC). Squarely on major-conference radars.

Blue-chip traits — a high-priority Power 4 target with the tools to contribute early at the highest level.

Blue Chip

The top of the scale — national-caliber talent that every major program pursues, with a clear NFL trajectory.

Elite / Top 100

Highly productive, big-framed defensive lineman who could play a number of spots along the front. Measured at 6-foot-3.5, 265 pounds with a 33.75-inch arm prior to his senior season. Has been a dominant, highly productive defensive lineman on Friday nights dating back to his sophomore season. Tallied 30 sacks over his final two seasons at Gardendale High. Frequently in opposing backfields, using his quickness and overall athleticism to make plays behind the line. A fluid mover who closes quickly behind the line of scrimmage. Has the body of a future interior defensive lineman but the movement skills of an EDGE player. Advanced as a pass rusher relative to most other top defensive linemen. Showed flashes of dominance at both the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and the Under Armour All-America Game. Got better as the week of practice went on at Under Armour and turned in a dominant performance in the game. Can continue to improve his overall consistency and hand usage at the next level.
