If you can believe it, we are officially under the 70-day mark until Alabama is back on a live-game football field. After coming up short in the national championship game against Georgia back in early January, the Crimson Tide will once again be searching for its seventh title under Nick Saban.

This year’s season opener will be against the Utah State Aggies on Sept. 3 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

With today being July 3, that means we are only 62 days away from the return of Alabama football. The team here at BamaOn3 is ready to celebrate every day of the countdown standing between now and the start of football season. Let’s focus on a player — both past and present — who represents — or has represented — the No. 62.

*Note: BamaOn3 is also doing a Countdown to Fall Camp, which is only 33 days away.

Who currently wears the No. 62?

Walk-on offensive lineman Jackson Roby will once again wear the No. 62 for Alabama. As a redshirt senior, the former Huntsville (Ala.) standout is now heading in Year 5 with the program. He was a part of the 2020 team that won the national title.

Who’s a noteworthy former player to wear it?

Coming out of Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. back in 2008, Terrence Cody was only rated as a three-star prospect. Yet, he’s currently one of only four players during the Nick Saban era to earn All-American status on two separate occasions. The other three are safety Mark Barron, linebacker C.J. Mosley and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

At 6-foot-4, 360-plus pounds, Cody was a mountain in the middle of Alabama’s defense. In two seasons, he only put up 52 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and half a sack, but it wasn’t about the numbers. He was an immovable object that made it nearly impossible to run against the Crimson Tide.

Alabama only surrended an average of 76.7 yards per contest over his 28 games donning the Crimson and White. Players such as Rolando McClain and Marcell Dareus contributed to that impressive run, but Cody might’ve had the single-biggest affect on the Crimson Tide’s dominant run defense.

After his career at Alabama, Cody went on to get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round (No. 57 overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the franchise, even helping to win Super Bowl XLVII in 2012. Unfortunately, he was released after the 2014 season and never signed on with another team.
