Former Washington staffers join Alabama as special assistants to head coach
Much like the roster, Alabama updated its staff directory on the first day of spring practice, and a pair of former Washington staffers have followed Kalen DeBoer to Tuscaloosa.
Former Huskies co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Chuck Morrell and head strength and conditioning coach Ron McKeefery were listed as special assistants to the head coach prior to the Crimson Tide’s first practice. Former Oklahoma analyst Jay Nunez, listed as a senior special teams analyst for Alabama, will also fill the same off-field role.
This will mark the fourth time Morrell has worked with DeBoer. He was teammates with DeBoer at Sioux Falls and coached alongside him from 2000-09. Morrell rejoined him at Fresno State as his safeties coach from 2020-21 and followed Deboer to UW where he called the Husky defense and once again coached the safeties. Now, he is at UA but off the field.
The updated staff directory also unveiled a pool of six off-field analysts. Former Alabama player Jamey Mosley is back in the role and will be joined by Kirk Barron, Mitch Dahlen, Matt Shadeed – who followed defensive coordinator Kane Wommack from South Alabama – Mark Sheridan – the brother of offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan – and Ryan Trevathan.
