Alabama tight ends Josh Cuevas and Danny Lewis Jr. were listed as questionable on the initial availability report for the Crimson Tide’s first-round playoff game at Oklahoma on Dec. 19.

Cuevas has missed the last three games after suffering a foot injury in practice leading up to the Eastern Illinois game. Lewis was questionable before the SEC Championship Game, but played against Georgia — his first snaps since the LSU game. He only played three snaps.

On Wednesday, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer shared the latest on Cuevas and Lewis.

“Both of them will be available,” DeBoer told reporters via Zoom. “The progress continues to happen.”

Cuevas was seen at Monday’s postseason practice, and while he was dressed out, the tight end rode a stationary bike off to the side. He hasn’t played since Alabama’s first matchup against the Sooners, where he caught six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. The redshirt senior is third on the team in receiving touchdowns (4) and fourth in receptions (30) in 10 games.

“Experience, athleticism, just consistent in everything, knows his assignment,” DeBoer said of Cuevas. “He’s been in the system now three years, and so, he can kind of do it all. He’s comfortable in the box, on the line, flexed out. All the little things that we really utilize our tight ends for, he’s just extremely comfortable doing it.”

Lewis has only played in five games this season after dealing with injuries since the spring. The redshirt junior has caught two passes for 17 yards. Both of them occurred against Missouri.

“Danny’s is just gonna continue to be ongoing like it has,” DeBoer said. “And so, we’re just utilizing him just to certain packages because he’s not necessarily an every-play type of guy, as far as just with the limitations he has. And so, he’ll be ready to go, but he’s a big body in there that we can utilize in ways. He knows the offense really well, also.”

With Cuevas out, Alabama turned to freshman Kaleb Edwards as its top option at the tight end position. Edwards played 36 snaps and caught three passes for 42 yards in the SEC title game against Georgia. Jay Lindsey and Marshall Pritchett also played double-digit snaps in the loss to the Bulldogs, as the Crimson Tide turned to its depth with the veteran sidelined.

Cuevas and Lewis were the only two Alabama players listed as questionable on Tuesday’s first availability report. Six other players were included, but they were all ruled out, including Bandit defensive end LT Overton, who missed the SEC championship because of illness.

Alabama’s first-round playoff game at Oklahoma is set for Friday at 7 p.m. CT (ABC/ESPN).
