Jam Miller update: When Alabama RB is expected to return from injury

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer told ESPN that he expects injured running back Jam Miller to return in time for the Crimson Tide’s conference opener at Georgia on September 27.
Miller suffered a dislocated collarbone in Alabama’s second and final scrimmage last Saturday, and DeBoer has already said the veteran running back will miss the 2025 opener at Florida State on August 30. Miller is doubtful to play in home games against ULM and Wisconsin.
The Tide has a bye before it travels to Athens, Georgia, for the highly anticipated matchup.
“He’s a leader for us, a quiet leader, but somebody the players all respect,” DeBoer told ESPN’s Chris Low. “Having that bye week, I feel good that he will be back out there. He does so many things for us at that position.”
A senior and the most experienced running back on the Crimson Tide’s 2025 team, Miller was the only Alabama back who carried the ball 100 or more times, or 10-plus times per game, and finished second on the team in every rushing category behind quarterback Jalen Milroe. The 2024 season was Miller’s most involved, as he ran for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries. He also caught 16 passes for 155 yards and another touchdown last year.

Alabama has six scholarship running backs on its roster. Richard Young, Daniel Hill and Kevin Riley return, while the Crimson Tide added Louisiana transfer Dre Washington and top 100 high school recruit AK Dear this offseason. Young, Hill and Washington are most likely to see significant carries in Miller’s absence to start Alabama’s 2025 season, but Riley, a redshirt freshman, is “creeping up,” Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb told ESPN.
“It’s going to be a little bit by committee until Jam gets back, and there’s going to be a proving ground — who can take care of the ball, who can advance the ball, take on the game plan and help us protect?” Grubb said. “I’m excited to see who’s going to come out here these next few days and take over.”
