Alabama outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler has been officially hired as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, the school announced.

“Coach Hutzler has helped lead many of the most successful programs in the nation and developed players who not only reached the NFL but excelled there and had outstanding careers,” said first-year head coach Jeff Lebby in a statement. “Put simply, he knows exactly what winning football looks like, and he’s gotten the most out of his players at every one of his stops.

“Coach Hutzler demands a toughness and intensity from his players, and we’re thrilled to add his drive and expertise to our staff.”

Added Hutzler, “I’m honored and excited to join the Bulldog family and this outstanding staff Coach Lebby is assembling. I look forward to building upon the storied history and tradition of elite defensive play here in Starkville.”

Hutzler is in his second year with the Crimson Tide, both as the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. He is expected to remain with the team through the postseason, though no official announcement has been made. Hutzler arrived at Alabama after three years at Ole Miss as the special teams coordinator and worked with Lebby in 2021.

Before serving as the special teams coordinator in Oxford, Hutzler was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas in 2020, his lone year as a defensive coordinator. His previous stops involved him coaching special teams and linebackers — South Carolina (2016-19), Boston College (2015), Florida (2014, 2010-11) and New Mexico (2012-13).

Hutzler began his coaching career at San Diego, working as a defensive assistant in 2006. He moved on to Stanford in 2007 and served as a recruiting assistant before moving to the defensive side of the football for the Cardinal as a defensive assistant coach in 2008-09.

A native of Las Vegas, Hutzler played football collegiately at Middlebury College in Vermont, where he also earned a degree in psychology. A linebacker from 2002-05, he was a team captain as a senior and left the Panthers football program ranking second in career tackles.
