JUCO center Emeka Opurum commits to Auburn

AUBURN — Butler Community College 7-foot center Emeka Opurum made his commitment to Auburn official on Wednesday morning.
Opurum wrapped up his Auburn visit on Tuesday after arriving on Monday.
“It’s a great environment. It has great people, great coaches, it was a great experience,” Opurum told Auburn Live on Tuesday. “It felt special because of how the coaches welcomed me. The school is bigger than I thought. The way and how friendly the people are, that surprised me.”
Opurum moved to the States in August before going through his first season at Butler. Opurum, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, just wrapped up his freshman season at Butler Community College in Kansas. He started 25 games, averaging over nine points and eight rebounds per game.

Playing 22 minutes per game, Opurum totaled 87 blocks last season in 33 games played. That led the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference in blocks. Opurum was named Defensive Player of the Year in the KJCCC and named First-Team All-KJCCC. He scored in double figures 13 times last season. For reference, St. John’s has also offered Opurum.
In his last 10 games, Opurum averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game.
“When I first got here, it was hard adjusting to things and the playing style,” Opurum said.
“It was hard. The stamina, I was always comparing myself to other people. One thing I learned is run your own race. Don’t compare yourself to other people. I was doing the things coaches like seeing. I’m coachable. I always sprint the floor.”
