For the first four weeks of the season, Clemson looked like a team ready to make some serious noise in 2022. But after dropping its first game of the year on March 13, the Tigers have not been able to get back on track.

Clemson lost both games of a doubleheader at Pitt on Friday, falling 8-0 in Game 1 and 10-7 in Game 2.

The Tigers have now dropped seven of their past nine games and are 16-7 (1-4) after opening the season 14-0. Pitt entered this weekend 10-10 (1-5) before beating the Tigers in two games on Friday.

Starting pitching was the biggest issue in Clemson’s two losses on Friday as ace Mack Anglin allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings of work, giving up six hits and walking five batters.

In Game 2, Nick Hoffmann allowed six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Four of Clemson’s five relievers also allowed a run the second game of the day.

Clemson did nothing offensively in Game 1, finishing with only six hits. No players had multiple hits in the shutout loss.

The Tigers did get going a bit offensively in Game 2 as Tyler Corbitt, Cooper Ingle and Max Wagner each homered. Chad Fairey also had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs. But it wasn’t enough.

Pitt built its lead to 9-1 after six innings before the Tigers battled back.

Pitt and Clemson will finish off their three-game series on Saturday at 3 p.m. Nick Clayton will get the start for the Tigers, while Billy Corcoran will be on the mound for the Panthers.

Clemson desperately needs a win as the Tigers look to regain some momentum.

Next week, the Tigers play at Winthrop on Tuesday, before returning home to host NC State in a three-game series over the weekend.

Clemson beat Winthrop 10-2 this past week but was unable to build on its momentum at Pitt.
