Florida State is not giving up hope on the eligibility status of one of its top defenders. In his Monday press conference, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell fielded a question about transfer defensive tackle Darrell Jackson and the latest updates from the NCAA.

Norvell responded that Florida State is “continuing to seek more guidance” on any reevaluation of Jackson’s playing status.

“I still find it unfortunate for the young man,” Norvell said. “In December is when he chose, for his situation, to go into the transfer portal. In January, a new standard was signed in with the NCAA on January 11th, and he had been enrolled here.”

The question stemmed from reports that the University of North Carolina is expecting word from the NCAA on wide receiver Tez Walker. According to an ESPN report over the weekend, the Tar Heels had some optimism that Walker may indeed be ruled eligible to play in 2023.

Like Walker at UNC, Jackson’s enrollment at Florida State predated the NCAA’s announcement of more stringent eligibility rules.

“I’m hopeful that that’s something that’s still getting looked at,” Norvell said. “It’s one of the things that we’re continuing to check back on.”

Jackson is still fully participating in practice and engaged with the team.

“If he does get cleared, whether it’s before the (LSU) game or whether it’s at some point during the season, he’ll be ready,” said Norvell.

Several Florida elected leaders have also asked the NCAA to reconsider its decision.
