Despite Castellanos injury scare, No. 7 Seminoles shine again in 66-10 rout of Kent State

The only thing routine about Florida State’s home game Saturday was the efficiency and explosiveness of the Seminoles’ offense.

There was a lightning delay, a halftime break DURING the second quarter, numerous offensive records, multiple injuries — including a brief scare involving FSU star quarterback Tommy Castellanos — and a second straight game with no FSU punts.

But among all the oddities was the continued consistency of the No. 7-ranked Seminoles’ offense.

One game after scoring touchdowns on each of its first 10 possessions, Florida State scored TDs on each of its first five drives and six of its first seven Saturday in a 66-10 rout of Kent State. The Seminoles also established a new single-game rushing record with 498 yards, while scoring points on 10 of their first 11 drives.

Even though Castellanos, the offense and several other starters didn’t play in the second half, the Seminoles still finished with 775 yards of total offense. They had 524 yards and 45 points at halftime.

Despite FSU’s third straight impressive performance, the Castellanos injury was concerning in the moment. With the Seminoles driving late in the second quarter, his ankle got rolled up on from behind after a pass completion. He then limped dramatically off the field.

When he returned from the locker room, however, Castellanos ran onto the field and appeared to be relatively fine. He did not return to action, however, as the game’s outcome had long been decided.

Freshman quarterback Kevin Sperry took over from there and once again looked sharp. He completed four of five passes for 64 yards before handing things over to redshirt sophomore Brock Glenn.

The star of the day, however, was redshirt freshman Micahi Danzy. The speedy wide receiver caught passes of 66 and 56 yards and also broke off a 64-yard run for a touchdown on the first few series of the game. Sophomore Sam Singleton also rushed 10 times for 86 yards and two scores.

Florida State also got another big day from veteran running back Gavin Sawchuk; he ran the ball 11 times for 97 yards and two scores to bring his season touchdown total to six (five rushing and one receiving).

Castellanos also turned in another nifty performance before his injury. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 205 yards, and he ran for 54 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

Florida State’s defense gave up one early touchdown on a tricky play that looked like a quarterback sweep but ended up being a 75-yard pass. But after that, the Seminoles surrendered just three points the rest of the way.

When lightning delayed the game late in the second quarter, the game officials decided to take the halftime break during that delay. They then played the final 2:29 of the second quarter before taking a quick break and resuming with the third quarter.

Florida State now will have a short week before traveling to face Virginia on Friday night.
