Florida State looks to bounce back tonight against high-scoring Georgia Bulldogs

First-year Florida State men’s basketball coach Luke Loucks wanted a challenging non-conference schedule, and that difficult slate continues tonight with the Georgia Bulldogs coming to town.

Four days after getting hammered by Texas A&M in a neutral-site game, FSU (5-2) will look to bounce back strong tonight against a Georgia squad that is 7-1 and suffered its only loss to Clemson in overtime. The game is set for 9 p.m. in the Tucker Center and will air on the ACC Network; it is part of the annual ACC-SEC Challenge.

The Bulldogs rank No. 1 nationally in scoring offense at 99.0 points per game, and they will meet a Florida State team that loves to push the tempo as well.

FSU is ranked No. 1 in the nation in 3-point field goals attempted per game (38.3) and fourth in 3-pointers made per game (12.3). The Seminoles also like to speed up opponents at the other end of the floor, as they rank fourth nationally with 11.9 steals per game.

Florida State was ranked among the national leaders in scoring offense at 93.2 points per game before its poor showing against Texas A&M. The Seminoles were blown out in that contest, 95-59, and they now are tied for 45th at 88.3 points per game.

As humbling as that loss was, Loucks said he hoped it would provide a lesson about the level of focus and tenacity needed to compete with the better programs in college basketball. After tonight’s game with the Bulldogs, Florida State takes on No. 7 Houston on the road this Saturday.

“It’s going to feel a lot like it did tonight,” Loucks said after the A&M game. “They’re big-time programs and big-time teams, and they’re coming in to kick our butt. If we’re not ready to play, it’s going to happen again.”

Florida State is led by three players who average over 13 points per game: Shooting guard Lajae Jones, points guard Robert McCray and forward Chauncey Wiggins.

Georgia is packed by guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, who averages 16.5 points, and guard Blue Cain, who averages 15.3 Freshman forward Jake Wilkins, son of NBA legend Dominique Wilkins, is averaging 9.5 and 3.3 rebounds.

Georgia’s most notable wins this season have come against Georgia Tech at home (92-87) and Xavier on a neutral court (78-77).

Florida State is 5-0 this season at home. FSU leads the all-time series with Georgia, 19-11, but the Bulldogs knocked off FSU in the ACC-SEC Challenge two years ago, 68-66, in Tallahassee.

The first 1,000 fans at tonight’s game will receive a mini-replica of Florida State’s 2012 ACC Championship banner, which hangs in the rafters of the Tucker Center.
