Shortly after reports surfaced that Florida State would be parting ways with defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr., Seminoles head football coach Mike Norvell confirmed that Surtain will not be returning for the 2026 season.

“Grateful for Pat and the contributions the last few years,” Norvell said at his signing day press conference Friday afternoon. “He’s a great man. He’s done a lot within the program. … Definitely wishing him the best as he moves forward and how we move forward with our staff.”

Surtain leaves Florida State after joining the staff in 2023.

When the Seminoles made sweeping changes to the defensive side of the ball after the 2024 season and brought in coordinator Tony White, Surtain worked with the defensive backs alongside new safeties coach Evan Cooper.

Asked about further staff changes, including coordinators, Norvell declined to offer specifics Friday afternoon. But he said he is conducting meetings with players and coaches to wrap up the season.
