Florida State running backs coach David Johnson is expected to leave Florida State for Arkansas, Warchant has confirmed.

Johnson also served as the Seminoles’ recruiting coordinator, joining the staff in January of 2020.

The newest Hog will join Ryan Silverfield at Arkansas. They coached together under Mike Norvell at Memphis in 2016 and 2017. After that, Johnson was at Tennessee before eventually joining Norvell again in Tallahassee in 2020.

Johnson developed multiple running backs at Florida State, the most notable being Trey Benson, who was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals after getting him to transfer from Oregon.

The Louisiana native also played big parts in multiple recruiting and transfer portal wins for Florida State. Wide receivers Keon Coleman and Destyn Hill, as well as running backs Ousmane Kromah and Kam Davis, are among the players he was primarily responsible for.

FSU running backs led the nation in average plays per game of 20-plus yards or more with 7.46 in 2022 under Johnson.

He and defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain are the first two Florida State assistants leaving in what is expected to be another year of transition for the Seminoles’ coaching staff.
