What they lacked in execution on Saturday, the Florida State football team made up for with explosiveness.

The Seminoles fumbled twice in the first half, committed a slew of penalties and made a number of other mental mistakes in their first game back from a bye week, but none of that mattered against an outclassed and overwhelmed Georgia Tech team.

Florida State racked up 642 yards of total offense, incluing 396 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Jordan Travis, and rolled to a 41-16 victory before a crowd of 61,007.

Travis’ previous career high was 321 yards earlier this season against Boston College.

With the win, the Seminoles snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-3 on the season and 3-3 in the ACC. Georgia Tech falls to 3-5 and 2-3.

From the opening kickoff, Florida State completely dominated the action in building a 24-3 lead at halftime. And it could have been worse.

The Seminoles outgained the Yellow Jackets in the first two quarters 360-24 — they had 270 passing yards and 90 rushing yards. But two fumbles, including one that was returned 71 yards to set up Georgia Tech’s only points of the first half, kept the game much closer than it should have been.

The Yellow Jackets then made things interesting briefly after halftime when the recovered an onside kick and quickly scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass to cut FSU’s lead to 24-10.

But Florida State answered with a 12-play, 91-yard touchdown drive — capped off by a 24-yard throw from Travis to Ja’Khi Douglas — to push the lead back to 21.

The Seminoles showed off their big-play capability throughout the first half, with the biggest of all being a 78-yard throw from Travis to receiver Johnny Wilson. They also scored on a 62-yard catch-and-run by Lawrance Toafili and a 7-yard run by Toafili.

Backup tailback CJ Campbell capped off the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown, and placekicer Ryan Fitzgerald was 2-for-2 on field goals.

Florida State returns to action next Saturday at rival Miami. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC.
