BREAKING: AD Alford says FSU will make decision on Norvell, football program 'at season's end'

Two years ago yesterday, Mike Norvell’s Florida State football team was undefeated and ranked No. 4 in the country as it prepared for a showdown at home with No. 16 Duke. Now, the Florida State football team is unranked. Currently riding a four-game losing streak. And Mike Norvell’s status is yet to be determined, per a statement released Monday morning.

Florida State director of athletics Michael Alford announced Monday that the university was in the process of a “comprehensive assessment of the football program,” one that will be completed “at season’s end.”

“Meanwhile,” Alford said, “we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks.”

Schoffel: It’s the emotions that make college athletics such bad business

After being hired from Memphis following the 2019 season, Norvell has had more downs than ups in his six seasons at the helm. He had three losing seasons (2020, 2021 and 2024) and seems to be well on his way to his fourth.

He also has four losing streaks of at least four games during his five-plus seasons at the helm. The last four-game losing streak before Norvell was in 1975.

There have been some good times, too. He authored a 19-game winning streak and his 2023 team went 13-0 and won the ACC Championship.

But since that night in Charlotte, or since the following afternoon when the Seminoles were left out of the College Football Playoff despite being undefeated, Norvell’s program has been one of the worst in the country.

Florida State is 5-15 in its last 20 games dating back to the Orange Bowl that year. And three of those wins were against Charleston Southern, East Texas A&M and Kent State.
