Former Florida State safety Derwin James dubbed 'best safety I've ever seen' by Jim Harbaugh
Florida State has former players all over the National Football League, but one is catching the loftiest of praise from his head coach.
The Los Angeles Chargers beat the Las Vegas Raiders, 20-9, Monday night. Former Seminole Derwin James, as usual, turned in a standout performance.
James had seven total tackles along with two pass deflections. One of those deflections landed in the hands of teammate Donte Jackson for the game-sealing interception in the end zone.
For moments just like that, James drew the highest compliment from Chargers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh.
“I’ve called him the best safety I’ve ever seen in the history of the National Football League,” Harbaugh stated. “I don’t think I’m going out on a limb there. He is one of the most incredible players I’ve ever watched.”
According to Harbaugh, one of the best parts of James’ game is how many different places he can line up on the field.

“I mean, he was playing at the line of scrimmage, he was playing in the intermediate, he was playing in the deep half and the deep part of the field,” Harbaugh listed. “And blitzing off the edge.”
According to Pro Football Focus, out of James’ 70 snaps played last night, only one of them was at the safety spot. He took ten snaps on the defensive line, 27 in the box, and the majority (30) from slot corner.
In the Florida State alumni’s two weeks of the season, James is currently one of Pro Football Focus‘ top ten safeties in pressures and coverage grade.
