FSU coach Mike Norvell addresses possibility of Jordan Travis joining coaching staff

JACKSONVILLE — It has been just over two weeks since he announced his retirement from the NFL, and former Florida State star quarterback Jordan Travis has yet to announce publicly what he plans to do next.
Many FSU fans have expressed hopes on social media and the Warchant message boards that Travis would come back and join the Florida State coaching staff in some capacity, and it sounds like Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell is of the same mindset.
Before his appearance Wednesday night at the Jacksonville stop of FSU’s Spring Booster Tour, Norvell was asked if there are plans to bring Travis back into the fold now that he is no longer playing for the New York Jets.
Florida State’s head coach said the retirement decision has been “tough” for Travis and that he is still sorting out what he wants to do next. But if Travis does have an interest in working with the Seminoles’ coaching or support staff, the door is certainly open.
“Obviously, we love him,” Norvell said. “He’s like family to me. If that’s the path that he wants to go, I’m going to work really hard to probably make sure that becomes our reality.”
Norvell smiled as he said that last part.
Travis, who led Florida State through most of a 13-0 season in 2023, never recovered physically from the catastrophic leg injury that cut that season short. Before that fateful day, he had blossomed into one of the most popular players in recent FSU history, thanks to his spectacular play and his well-documented college journey.

After beginning his college career at Louisville, Travis transferred to Florida State in 2019 and languished on the bench for most of that first season. He then went on to start 38 games over the next four years and led a major turnaround of the Seminoles’ program.
Travis was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and overall ACC Player of the Year in 2023 after passing for 2,756 yards with 20 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Travis also finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting that year, despite missing Florida State’s final three games.
