FSU commit Miles Russell shines, Tyler Weaver makes match play at U.S. Amateur

Three Florida State golfers and one high school commit competed this week in the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and at least two have moved on to match play, with one still to be determined.
Florida State golf commit Miles Russell stole the show for the Seminoles during round two. After shooting an even-70 in round one, the top-ranked junior golfer came out firing with six birdies to card a 4-under 66.
When he finished, that score was tied for the low round in the tournament. It was later beaten by Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout, who shot 65 on Tuesday to win medalist honors.
Russell finished the stroke-play portion in solo third, and he was still waiting late Tuesday night to learn his opponent in the round of 64. But his first match is slated to tee off at 4:50 p.m. ET today.
Florida State golfer Tyler Weaver, who has already had an impressive summer by qualifying for the U.S. Open, is the only current Seminole locked into match play.
After starting the event bogey-bogey in round one, Weaver was able to put together a 1-over 71 and an even-par 70 to tie for 23rd and move on to the match play portion of the tournament.
The main highlight for Weaver came on the par-five fourth hole of the Ocean course, when he pulled off an eagle. It was one of only five total eagles made on the Ocean course during the first two rounds.
