FSU QB Tommy Castellanos on Alabama comments: 'We stand on what I said'

CHARLOTTE — Making his first public media appearance since his controversial comments this summer about Florida State’s season-opening opponent, Alabama, quarterback Tommy Castellanos emphasized Wednesday that he meant “no disrespect” to the Crimson Tide.

But he added that he stands by what he said about his confidence in Florida State’s offense and added that his teammates have told him they support him and appreciate his confidence.

“We stand on what I said,” Castellanos said during a session with Florida State media at ACC Kickoff. “I said I what I said. We stand on that. I don’t mean no disrespect to none of those guys at Alabama or anything like that. I have confidence in my guys and the work we’ve been putting in and preparing and the preparation we’ve been putting together. That’s all that was.

“No disrespect to those guys. But we stand on what I said.”

Castellanos caused a stir earlier this summer when he said he didn’t think Alabama’s defense could stop him and the FSU offense when they play on Aug. 30 in Doak Campbell Stadium.

“I’m excited, man,” Castellanos told Pete Nakos with On3. “People, I don’t know if they know, but you go back and watch every first game that I played in, we always start fast. I dreamed of moments like this. I dreamed of playing against Alabama. They don’t have Nick Saban to save them. I just don’t see them stopping me.”

Florida State coach Mike Norvell also was asked about Castellanos’ comments and said that all players have different ways of expressing themselves. He added that it’s only “true confidence” when a player backs up his talk with actions, and he believes Castellanos has done that with his work this summer.
