FSU freshman Micahi Danzy didn’t necessarily expect to be in this position.

When he signed with the Florida State football team out of Tallahassee’s Florida High, Danzy knew he was going to also run track on the college level. And he was very confident in his abilities.

But even he didn’t think he would be entering this NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the fastest 400-meter time in the country.

“Definitely expected to run a 44, but not this low of a 44,” Danzy told Warchant before leaving for the meet in Eugene, Ore. “Thank God for that.”

When Danzy posted a time of 44.38 seconds at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships last month, he established a new ACC record, an FSU record, and also the 22nd-fastest time ever recorded in collegiate track and field.

At the NCAA meet, he will be a favorite to win the 400, and he also will be part of FSU’s 4×100 relay team, along with Jaiden Rollins, Neo Mosebi and Durian Moss.

In each event, he will be competing against many of the top sprinters in the country.

Just don’t ask Danzy for a breakdown of the field.

“My teammates laugh at me,” Danzy said. “But like, I never know who I race. It’s funny, ’cause [they are] like, ‘Oh, you raced him.’ And I’m like, ‘I raced him? I didn’t know.’

“I just go out there and run and have fun. That’s all I like to do.”

That approach is working pretty well for the two-sport athlete so far, even if his last official 400 race was not quite as impressive. Danzy posted a time of 45.26 at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, which was good enough to place fifth overall and qualify him for the national meet, but it clearly was not up to his standards.

The FSU freshman explained that he was still recovering from the blistering race he ran at ACCs when he went to Jacksonville. That will not be the case Wednesday night, when he runs his first 400.

“I want to dominate first round,” Danzy said. “I don’t want to just survive like last time. That meet, it felt like I just survived and advanced. I want to dominate this meet.”

In pursuit of that goal, the Tallahassee product said he has been intently working on improving his lactic tolerance, which should result in better endurance and form during the crucial final 100 meters of his races. To accomplish that, he has been sprinting 350 meters, then walking 50, sprinting 50, walking 50 and so on.

“When the monkey’s up on your back, that’s the hardest thing to fight,” Danzy said with a smile, before adding that the new workouts are extremely strenuous. “It makes you rethink about loving track.”

Danzy’s first race in Eugene will take place at 7:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday in the semifinals of the 4×100 relay. At 8:41 p.m., he is scheduled to run in the 400.

FSU fans will be able to watch the entire NCAA meet on ESPN+, while some specific events will also be broadcast on ESPN’s family of channels.

Once this meet has concluded, Danzy is expected to turn his attention back to the FSU football team, where he will be a redshirt freshman wide receiver this fall. The 2024 campaign wasn’t what he was looking for when he signed with the Seminoles — FSU went 2-10 as a team and he saw just two carries and one reception for 38 yards — but he’s still looking forward to rejoining the team this summer.

“I’m always up for a challenge,” Danzy said. “Football didn’t go like I expected. But growing up, nothing went like I expected. So this is nothing new to me. I’m gonna always fight a challenge.”
