It was supposed to be a series between two of the best teams in the country. So far, through the first two games, only one team has showed up. And it hasn’t been Florida State.

The No. 2 Seminoles were blown out by the No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday night, 11-1, in seven innings to lose the series in overwhelming fashion through the first two games. Florida State can try to salvage one win on Saturday afternoon, but if it goes like the first two have, that’s going to be a real challenge.

North Carolina chased FSU starter Joey Volini after just 3 2/3 innings (95 pitches) and then hammered the bullpen over the final three frames to cruise to the 10-run win.

Volini allowed five earned runs. Reliever Joe Charles allowed three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work, and Jacob Marlowe gave up a three-run homer to North Carolina’s Tyler Bass in the top of the seventh that broke the game all the way open.

In 16 innings of this series, North Carolina has scored 19 runs on 21 hits, 13 walks and four hit-by-pitches.

Meanwhile, Florida State has scored 4 runs on 11 hits and 1 walk. One. Walk.

So, in 16 innings, FSU’s pitching has given up 17 free bases. North Carolina has given up one.

Not only are the Florida State pitchers having a hard time throwing strikes, but FSU’s hitters are struggling to get on base. Which is a rather large reason why the Tar Heels have stormed to the first two wins of this series and put themselves in prime position to be a Top 8 national seed.

The Seminoles, meanwhile, might be on the outside looking in after this series. Especially if they can’t salvage a win on Saturday afternoon.

Wes Mendes will get the ball on the mound for Florida State, which is now 36-13 on the season and 16-10 in the ACC. North Carolina is 39-11 and 18-10.

The Seminoles’ lone RBI on Friday came on a two-out double by Myles Bailey to score Alex Lodise. No Florida State batter had more than one base hit in the game, and Bailey’s hit was the lone one for extra bases.
