Running backs, Jordan Travis power FSU Football to season-opening romp over Duquesne

This was more like it.
For the first time since 2016, the Florida State football team opened a season with a win. And what a resounding victory it was.
Facing the Duquesne Dukes, an overmatched FCS opponent, the Seminoles raced out to a 26-point lead at halftime, scored on each of their first six drives and rolled to a 47-7 victory.

Junior quarterback Jordan Travis only stayed in the game through the first drive of the third quarter, but he led the Seminoles to scores on each of his six possessions — four touchdowns and two field goals.
Travis finished his night with 207 yards on 11-of-15 passing, and he scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. His two biggest completions were a 51-yard pass to wide receiver Johnny Wilson and a 48-yarder to receiver Kentron Poitier.
FSU’s three-headed backfield of Treshaun Ward, Trey Benson and Lawrance Toafili did the most damage, combining for 333 yards on 38 carries. All three broke the 100-yard barrier, which is a first in FSU history.

Toafili (13 carries, 101 yards) and Benson (11-105) each rushed for one touchdown, and Ward (14-127) added two more. Freshman Rodney Hill came in for the fourth quarter and continued the dominance with 9 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown.
The game didn’t go off without a hitch.
Kickoff was delayed about 90 minutes due to a weather delay, and the Seminoles suffered a few injury scares. Wilson went down with an apparent ankle injury on his long completion; he was treated in the injury tent and remained on the sideline but did not re-enter the game.
Redshirt sophomore Darius Washington, who started the game at center because the Seminoles were without their top two options at that position, also left the game in the first half. He did not return, as Dillan Gibbons and other players took turns at center the rest of the way.
Linebacker Amari Gainer also was seen in the second half with his foot in a protective boot as he walked with the aid of crutches.
With an 1-0 start in the books, FSU now will prepare to face LSU in New Orleans next Sunday.
