The Florida State men’s basketball team suffered its fifth consecutive loss on Tuesday night, and this one was no more palatable than the rest.

Other than for about 20 seconds early on, the Seminoles trailed from wire-to-wire and were blown out by the host Dayton Flyers, 97-69. With the loss, Florida State falls to 5-6 on the season, while Dayton improves to 9-3.

The Flyers have now won 10 straight games at home and 33 consecutive non-conference home games.

As has been the case in several of FSU’s recent losses, the Seminoles were competitive for stretches late in the first half and early in the second. But after point guard Robert McCray hit a layup to cut Dayton’s lead to 44-36, the Flyers went on a quick 9-1 run to push their advantage to 16.

Dayton led by at least 19 points for the final 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

“We’re just not playing good basketball,” first-year head coach Luke Loucks said on his post-game radio show. “We’re not a good basketball team right now.”

And they seem to play worse as games go on.

In the Seminoles’ loss to UMass this past Saturday, they gave up 60 points in the second half. On Tuesday night, they gave up 55 in that period.

“I thought we just laid down and quit,” Loucks said. “We’re gonna watch the film, we’re gonna keep trying to push to get better. No one is going to save us. We’ve got to find a way to get better, and we’ve got to find a way to galvanize our group and play some good basketball.”

Florida State was led offensively by Kobe MaGee with 15 points and Lajae Jones with 14; Jones also led the Seminoles with 8 rebounds. FSU also got 11 points from Martin Somerville and 10 from McCray.

Dayton was led by Javon Bennett and De’Shayne Montgomery with 25 and 20 points, respectively. Bennett was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, as the Flyers went to charity stripe 47 times, making 40.

Five different Florida State players fouled out of the game.

“We fouled way too much,” Loucks said. “We’re not going to blame anyone but ourselves. We’ve got to be better.”

Next up for the Seminoles will be a home game Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting Mississippi Valley State.
