Spanish guard Maximo Garcia-Plata signs with FSU men's basketball team
The Florida State men’s basketball team has signed another international prospect for this upcoming season, as Spanish shooting guard Máximo García-Plata announced Monday he is joining the Seminoles.
Garcia-Plata, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard who played most recently for Real Madrid in Spain, will bolster the Seminoles’ first backcourt under new head coach Luke Loucks. Although he is only 17 years old, Garcia-Plata is set to turn 18 in September before the start of the 2025-26 season.
“Really liked the idea of going to Florida State because I think we can really compete this year, and I personally can improve and develop my game a lot,” Garcia-Plata told Warchant. “I really like Luke’s idea of having a good relationship with his players and the good atmosphere he has created in the team. I think it’s going to be a really good year for FSU.”
The Spanish guard played 19 games for the Real Madrid B team in the 2024-25 Tercera FEB league season. He averaged 9.9 points per game, shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 31.2 percent from 3-point range.

Garcia-Plata also played in Spain’s U-19 league and the Adidas Next Generation Tournament.
With Florida State bringing in a slew of experienced guards through the transfer portal — led by seniors Robert McCray, Lajae Jones and Kobe Magee — Garcia-Plata likely won’t be needed to contribute substantially early in his freshman season.
The Seminoles earlier signed Russian center Egor Ryzhov to help fill out Loucks’ first roster.
