WR Jonah Winston continues the tradition, commits to Florida State

Florida State coach Mike Norvell landed another wide receiver commitment on Saturday, and it was a very familiar name to Seminole fans.
Alabama playmaker Jonah Winston, the younger brother of former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, committed to Florida State before the season opener against Alabama.
So why did the younger Winston decide to continue the family tradition?
“The real question is, ‘Why not FSU,'” Jonah told Warchant. “I love this program, and it’s been that way for a long time! FSU treats me like family, and that’s really what we are. … It’s really cool, man. Been at FSU it feels like my whole life. And to have the chance to join this amazing program and bring it back to where it used to be is a blessing.”
Winston’s recruitment was relatively quiet before his decision. Early on, he had interest from major programs like Auburn, Arkansas and Texas A&M. But no school pursued him quite like the Seminoles.
“I knew it was going to be FSU when they were the only program to consistently stay in touch with me,” Jonah Winston said. “It clicked during the summer for me for real. Just wanted to wait and see how things played out.”
Another reason that the Seminoles stood out, he said, was that Norvell made it clear that he wasn’t being recruited because of his older brother.
“I love Coach Norvell,” the three-star receiver said. “He has this certain swagger about himself. The energy he has and the love he has for his players, no one else was really able to compete with that. Our conversations are always great.”
Even though he was very young at the time, Jonah has very fond memories of cheering on his famous brother during the 2013 and ’14 seasons. And now he’s looking forward to creating some of his own.

“It’s not as much pressure as people may think,” Winston said. “Me and my brother bring different things to this game, but we’re just cut from the same cloth. I’m looking forward to doing big things at FSU and making a name for myself.”
Winston will primarily play slot receiver once he gets to Florida State. However, the staff has told him they will create different packages to move him around as well.
His commitment is another recruiting win for Florida State receivers coach Tim Harris Jr., who is putting together one of the top WR classes in the country.
“Since Day 1 I met him, I felt a certain trust I could have with him that wasn’t there with most,” Winston said. “He always has kept it real with me and always been about me. He loves his guys and wants the best out of his players.”
Winston is currently on campus attending the Florida State-Alabama game later this afternoon. He officially committed to the Seminoles before the team took the field for pregame warmups.
Friday night, the Hoover (Ala.) High standout caught a touchdown pass and recorded a game-sealing interception.
