ATHENS, Ga. — Football season is finally here! Georgia coaches and players are back in Athens for the start of fall camp in preparation for the 2023 season – one in which they’ll be looking to accomplish something that hasn’t been done since the 1930s.

Over the final month leading up to kickoff on September 2nd against UT-Martin, the Bulldogs will go to battle with themselves. In the heat of a Peach State summer, Kirby Smart and the rest of his staff will put the team to the test to find out what they’ve got. Starting spots are up for grabs on the offensive line, in the secondary and of course under center while competition is sure to be had everywhere on the field to determine the top Dawgs.

DawgsHQ will be with you every step of the way, keeping you up to date on what we’re hearing, seeing and learning throughout the course of fall camp. Below you’ll be able to find live updates from interviews with coaches and players, our favorite articles and much, much more.

After Georgia players had a day off on Sunday, the Bulldogs are back in action for Week 3 of preseason practice. Media was able to see a portion of Tuesday’s session, one that took place in the indoor due to rain in the area. Here are observations from Jake Rowe and Palmer Thombs.

Since the scrimmage on Saturday, here are a couple of our favorite stories:

CORNERBACKS: With Kamari Lassiter out on Saturday, Georgia’s defensive backs got plenty of opportunities to show what they’ve got to offer in the team’s scrimmage.
STOCK REPORT: With one scrimmage in the books, we take a look at who’s improved their standing so far in preseason practice.
OPTIMISM AT RB: Georgia head coach Kirby Smart knows the Bulldogs are banged up at running back, but he believes they’ll be okay.

ROOM TO GROW: Kirby Smart says the Bulldog quarterbacks could have been better on Saturday in their first scrimmage
INJURY REPORT: Georgia defender suffers injury in scrimmage, updates on other banged up Bulldogs

Georgia took to Sanford Stadium on Saturday for the first scrimmage of the fall. Media wasn’t allowed in, but DawgsHQ has been able to gather some information about the happenings between the hedges. After the fact, we heard from head coach Kirby Smart.

Thursday, August 10th

QBs: Ahead of the first scrimmage, Mike Bobo explains what he wants to see from Georgia’s quarterbacks

Today marks the second of media availabilities this week. No practice viewing but Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Dell McGee are set to meet with reporters around 12:00 p.m. ET. Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, a couple of stories from the last few days.

HARTLEY: UGA has become home to the country’s best tight end room over the last few years, and Todd Hartley credits that more to the Bulldog brand than himself.
SCHUMANN: Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is happy in Athens and knows the grass isn’t always greener. How long that keeps him around remains to be seen.

Tuesday, August 8th

PRACTICE REPORT: Media got to see three periods of practice on Tuesday. There were a couple of players off to the side, separate from their position groups, and a key piece of the offensive plan back in action.
DUMAS-JOHNSON/MONDON: Kirby Smart gave Jamon Dumas-Johnson and Smael Mondon a challenge this past spring. So far, they’ve responded to it in a way Glenn Schumann likes to see.
BOWERS: Todd Hartley gave a glowing review of Georgia tight end Brock Bowers on Tuesday. Jake Rowe recaps what the Bowers’ position coach had to say about the Bulldog superstar.

  • A couple of notes as they came in from time with Schumann and Hartley can be found here. We also have videos for you from both assistants uploaded to the DawgsHQ YouTube Channel.

It’s the second week of Georgia preseason practice, and with that comes new opportunities for the media to be in the building. Glenn Schumann and Todd Hartley are expected to speak with reporters around noon today with two more coaches coming later this week. Also, there’s practice viewing set for later today, so be sure to check back for updates.

Saturday, August 5th

No media availabilities the last few days, but if you’re following Georgia Football on social media, you know that with the weekend came the pads. Fear not, we’ve still got some stories (and photos from Georgia social!) for you though.

LBU: Georgia took the title of LBU from ESPN for a fourth straight season, and it’s showing with the development of Glenn Schumann’s group – especially without their leading tackler for the time being.
WIDE RECEIVER: Kirby Smart likes to create competition, but he won’t have to do that within the wide receiver room. The Bulldogs are doing that themselves, and it’s giving them valuable depth in the process.

Thursday, August 3rd

BULLARD: Everybody in Ohio (and in the Big Ten) wants to look back on last season and the ending of the Peach Bowl. Georgia’s star defensive back is done talking about that though with physicality remaining a part of his identity.
PHOTOS: Media was allowed access to about 15 minutes of practice. Palmer Thombs snapped over 100 pictures. Here’s what he saw through the lens!
PRACTICE REPORT: Georgia hosted its first practice of fall camp Thursday morning as opposed to the Bulldogs’ typical afternoon practice time. Kirby Smart told reporters yesterday that was because a few players still had final exams to take for their summer classes. Either way, we got to see some football.

Wednesday, August 2nd

TAKEAWAYS: Jake Rowe shares with you what he thought the three most important things said during Wednesday’s press conference were.
QUARTERBACKS: Didn’t take long for Kirby Smart to get asked the quarterback question. With an ongoing competition, the head coach explained what he wants to see and how a winner will be determined.

  • In speaking about the running backs, Smart shouts out walk-on Cash Jones has one of the players that had the best offseason. Adds that he’s not sure there’s a superstar in the group but is pleased with the way they all help on a team level.
  • Talking about the outside linebacker room, Smart says there are a lot of “young, eager guys” ready to grow.
  • Smart says he’s seen exponential growth in Xavian Sorey since Mondon’s injury this spring. He’s been healthy which plays a part, but Smart has seen him grow as a leader too.
  • On a positive injury note, Mykel Williams has been able to participate in drills coming off of a spring injury and should be able to practice, albeit at a lower volume. For a full injury report, click HERE.
  • On injuries, Smael Mondon and Branson Robinson are both cleared for dry-land running but are not full speed for the start of fall camp. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins is dealing with a foot injury that is stress related (not a break) and has been held out some.
  • Discussing defensive back Javon Bullard, Smart says determining his position is very much about the players around him. With his versatility, he’s one of the team’s top 11 players and figuring out how the players around him fit is an emphasis.
  • On the quarterback conversation, Smart’s message is to see them be where their feet are at in all the activities of fall camp (i.e. practice, walk throughs, film, etc.)
  • Focus of fall camp is physical and mental toughness with exposure to each other and scheme. “Difference in the two teams last two years is their connection in training camp. That’ll be a goal in this training camp.”
  • Smart says summer success is determined by avoiding injury and getting conditioned. Feels happy with where the team is at in both areas.
  • Smart opens press conference with excitement for renovations at Sanford Stadium
  • Kirby Smart expected to get going with the media around 2:15 p.m. ET

Georgia players will report to camp today in the Classic City, and reporters will hear from Kirby Smart to get things started in the afternoon. It was just over two weeks ago that Smart and three players (Brock Bowers, Kamari Lassiter and Sedrick Van Pran) addressed the media in Nashville at SEC Media Days, answering many of the biggest questions. However, there are sure to be more talking points that come out of the opening press conference to the 2023 season.
