Indiana basketball has extended a scholarship offer to one of the most highly regarded prospects in the class of 2027, 6-foot-7 forward Marcus Spears Jr., TheHoosier.com confirmed over the weekend.

Spears, who plays his high school basketball at Dynamic Prep in Texas, is currently ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the class of 2027 and the No. 2 overall recruit in the state of Texas, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

A versatile wing with elite physical tools and a strong two-way motor, Spears was one of 12 players selected to represent Team USA earlier this month at the 2026 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

During the tournament, Spears averaged around 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game while shooting around 60% from the field.

Sunday marked the first day college coaches could directly contact class of 2027 recruits, and Indiana wasted little time extending an official offer to the standout forward.

Spears Jr. is the son of former NFL defensive end and current ESPN analyst Marcus Spears. His mother, Aiysha Smith Spears, was a standout basketball player at LSU before being selected No. 7 overall in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics.

With a strong athletic pedigree, Spears has been guided through the recruiting process by his parents, both of whom bring extensive experience in high-level sports.

So far, Spears has taken unofficial visits to SMU and Texas. In addition to Indiana, he holds offers from Oklahoma State, LSU, Miami (FL), Tennessee, Stanford and SMU.

“I do all the stuff that most people don’t want to do, like rebounding, playing hard, and defense,” Spears told KSR+ in May. “That’s really what I do best. As my scoring ability keeps building, I’m getting into a bigger role as a scorer. Right now, it’s mainly defense, rebounding, and playing hard.”

“I’m not just a scorer or someone who plays defense and gets rebounds,” Spears continued. “I want to be able to score the ball and play defense. I want to work on more iso ball, being able to get on an island with somebody, and score the ball.”

Spears currently has no upcoming visits planned. As direct contact between coaches and 2027 prospects is now permitted, the recruiting process is expected to accelerate for the rising star.
