Archie Goodwin hit the game-winner to send La Familia to the Lexington Regional final on Sunday, but afterward, all he could think of were the shots he missed; in fact, he told reporters that he was headed back to the gym after the press conference to work on his form.

Goodwin led La Familia in scoring again in the 80-76 win over War Ready with 16 points; however, that came on 6-14 shooting from the floor and 2-9 from the free-throw line. Several of those misses came in the fourth quarter and the Elam Ending as La Familia was trying to put the game away.

“You’ve gotta flush it,” Goodwin said of his poor shooting percentages. “If I don’t flush it, then it’ll trickle over to the next game. Like, I’ve never shot free throws this bad in my life. Two for six yesterday, or five, and then 2-9. I’ve never done that in my life. I know it’s just corrections that I need to make. I’ve already recognized what it is, so I’m gonna go shoot some after we leave here. I’m gonna go shoot some free throws, and then I’ll be ready for the next game.”

Goodwin even took to social media to apologize to Big Blue Nation for his ugly second-half shooting, vowing to be better on Tuesday night when La Familia hosts Eberlein Drive for a spot in the TBT quarterfinals; Coincidentally, Goodwin played for Eberlein Drive for four summers before switching to La Familia.

Goodwin ultimately saved the day, but La Familia head coach Sean Woods said that he and the rest of La Familia need to clean up their mistakes to keep advancing. Eberlein Drive is a perennial TBT power, one of two teams from the inaugural event in 2014. Last year, Goodwin helped lead Eberlein Drive to the TBT semifinals, where they lost to Forever Coogs, Houston’s alumni team. Eberlein Drive won its first two games in this year’s event by 18 points each, knocking out Tampa Florida Pickup Basketball on Sunday 86-68.

“You’ve gotta know that this team is much better than the team we played before,” Woods said of War Ready, a team of mostly Auburn alumni. “Like Archie said, coming down the stretch, we’ve just got to do a better job from an offensive standpoint, take advantage of that. He knows he’s not gonna miss those types of free throws again. And if we do that now, the game’s not as close.”

Archie’s extra practice will certainly help; so can you. Tickets for Tuesday night’s final are still available on Ticketmaster. The crowds have been great at Memorial so far. Thanks to The Ville losing to Sideline Cancer last night, La Familia can host all of its remaining games, including the winner-takes-all $1 million championship. Woods said that without the fans, the former Cats may not have been able to hold War Ready off.

“We found a way to win, which showed our character, and if it wasn’t for the fans — you know, this is true blue, and true blue won the game tonight. We’re true blue. They’re true blue, and that’s what won the game.”
