Arkansas and Alabama
In 1992 I was in Birmingham, Alabama for the SEC Tournamant and I watched one of the best basketball games I have ever seen in my life between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Razorbacks were led by Todd Day, Lee Mayberry and Oliver Miller and the Tide by James “Hollywood” Robinson and Latrell Sprewell. It was a great game and I loved every minute of it….went to overtime, the Tide won and the Cats beat them up the next day.
Tonight’s game was not quite as good, but it was excellent. Arkansas fought back from an 18 point deficit to take a late lead. Then the last two minutes saw alternate HUGE shots that defined the word clutch. Both teams played close to perfection during this time, until the very end, when Alabama missed a late layup.
When people tell you that college basketball is not the same….point to this game. Two teams, neither very good, both fighting for a tourney spot. Yet the game had me screaming at the tv and cheering by myself in my room. Now, yes that may be a sad statement about me, but it is also a strong statement about college basketball.
