BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Cal vs. K By The Numbers

by:Bryan1305/19/16
This morning Marquis Bolden will make his college decision between Kentucky and Duke.  Calipari and Coach K have completely separated themselves from any other college coach in terms of recruiting.  But is there a gap between the two of them?  Below are all of the Top 20 Rivals recruits that each coach has brought in since Calipari arrived at UK and how long each player stayed in college plus their NBA Draft spot. Calipari (2009) John Wall: 1 year, #1 NBA Draft (2009) Demarcus Cousins: 1 year, #5 NBA Draft (2010) Enes Kanter: 1 year (sort of), #3 NBA Draft (2010) Brandon Knight: 1 year, #8 NBA Draft (2010) Terrence Jones: 2 years, #18 NBA Draft (2011) Anthony Davis: 1 year, #1 NBA Draft (2011) Michael Kidd Gilchrist: 1 year, #2 NBA Draft (2011) Marquis Tegaue: 1 year, #29 NBA Draft (2012) Nerlens Noel: 1 year, #6 NBA Draft (2012) Alex Poythress: 4 years (2012) Archie Goodwin: 1 year, #29 NBA Draft (2013) Julius Randle: 1 year, #7 NBA Draft (2013) Andrew Harrison: 2 years, #44 NBA Draft (2013) Aaron Harrison: 2 years, Undrafted (2013) Dakari Johnson: 2 years, #48 NBA Draft (2013) James Young: 1 year, #17 NBA Draft (2013) Marcus Lee: 3 years (maybe) (2014) Karl Towns: 1 year, #1 NBA Draft (2014) Trey Lyles: 1 year, #12 NBA Draft (2015) Skal Labiessiere: 1 year (2015) Jamal Murray: 1 year (2015 Isaiah Briscoe: 2 years (?) One and Dones: 15 out of 22 Average NBA Draft Spot: 14th Coach K (2009) Ryan Kelly, 4 year, #48 NBA Draft (2010) Kyrie Irving: 1 year, #1 NBA Draft (2011) Austin Rivers: 1 year, #10 NBA Draft (2012) Rasheed Sulaimon: 4 years (transferred) (2013): Jabari Parker: 1 year, #2 NBA Draft (2014) Jahlil Okafor: 1 year, #3 NBA Draft (2014) Tyus Jones: 1 year, #24 NBA Draft (2014) Justice Winslow: 1 year, #10 NBA Draft (2015) Brandon Ingram: 1 year (2015) Derryck Thornton: Transferring (2015): Chase Jeter: 2 years (and counting) One and Dones: 7 out of 11 Average NBA Draft Spot: 14th What do you think?  I think looking at these elite players you see a couple things.  First, Calipari has a lot more experience with this.  And 2nd, the fact that 2 of the 11 Duke guys transferred is an issue.  You could argue Kelly, Sulaimon, Thornton, and Jeter have been busts for Duke.  For Kentucky, probably Poythress and Skal with Briscoe still up in the air.  And considering the amount of guys Calipari has had versus Coach K, that is a huge positive for UK.  Will this affect Bolden's decision?  No.  But the idea that Calipari and Coach K are 1-1A in recruiting just doesn't stack up.
