I long since stopped rationalizing and trying to figure out a way UK could have a 9-3 season. Hell, they haven't gone 8-4 in my lifetime. But every year we have that fan who thinks this is the year for 8 or 9 wins despite all evidence pointing to the long, painful slog to 6 wins. It's just the burden that UK fans take on. We're not quitters. We see our SEC brothers find ways to win 8+ games every now and then, even Vanderbilt. So why can't we? Well, I am going with a different goal this year:
SCREW 8 WINS. I ONLY NEED 2. FLORIDA AND LOUISVILLE
That's right, I can accept a 2-10 year. As long as those 2 wins are Florida and Louisville. I am so sick of losing to the Gators. This year will make 30 YEARS since we beat Florida. 15 times they have come to Lexington and we can't just fluke into a win once. And with Florida we have absolutely choked away so many of those games over the years. The game UK led 21-3 in the 4th quarter only to see Lorenzen throw what I contend is the worst INT in my lifetime. The game just 2 years ago where the play clock debacle happened but we shouldn't ignore that UK still should have been able to stop Florida on a 4th and long in overtime. Another thing that is frustrating is the Florida game is almost always early in the season, meaning UK takes a demoralizing loss early on in conference play.
And the losing streak to the Cards is long enough and the losing streak to Petrino needs to end. Not only is losing to your rival tough but losing to a cocky prick like Petrino makes it doubly difficult. Last year's game was brutal. Basically an embarrassment. It doesn't make me super confident in Barker this year but it also told me that UK wasn't that far off from beating the Cards. They will be better this year but in theory so should we. And while I will take dominance in the basketball series over football most any time, I wouldn't mind trading in a basketball win to take the game at Papa John's this year. No matter where the record is at that point, to wrap up the regular season with a win there against UL will really help Stoops and Co.
Will I cheer for 12-0? Do I want UK to win every game by 500 points? Of course. I'm just like every fan that despite the disappointment of the last 5 years I will be right back on board come September. With that said I don't know if I see a big year for the Cats this year. And I have reached a point of becoming tired of expecting big things and then ending the year in disappointment. So I am just approaching the year focusing on the 2 games I want the most. Win both and the rest of the year is gravy.
