BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Senior QB's Rare but Successful

Want something that stunned me before I researched it?  Kentucky has only had THREE regular senior starting QB's since 1994.  Kentucky has had brief moments of great QB play, namely Couch, Lorenzen, and Woodson.  But overall, QB has often been a problem for the Wildcats and a key factor in lack of success.  This year, Stephen Johnson would appear to have the job at the beginning of the season but it is unclear at this point if he will be the for sure starter all year.  Drew Barker appears to be a serious candidate to replace him if Johnson doesn't perform early in the year. But should Johnson get the job for the full season, UK's rare senior QB has actually performed quite well on an individual basis.  The team results are mixed but I don't think you could have asked for much more from these individuals: Jared Lorenzon (2003): 191-336, 2221 yards, 16 TD, 8 INT (4-8 record) Andre Woodson (2007): 327-518, 3709 yards, 40 TD, 11 INT (8-5 record) Mike Hartline (2010): 268-405, 3178 yards, 23 TD, 9 INT (6-7 record) Each of these QB's had very solid TD-INT ratios and threw for a good to great yardage.  Two of the three made bowls.  I understand you have to play the best guy at the position but I think a senior QB should have some advantage, especially one who has shown the success winning that Johnson has.  Maybe Drew Barker has passed Johnson for some reason.  But his relative lack of experience and every smaller amount of winning and I think Johnson will be the way to go this year.  It would be nice to see a senior in that spot all year once again.
