Calipari to be a part of ESPN's MLK tribute

by:Thomas Beisner01/10/11
ESPN announced this evening that in honor of the 25th anniversary of the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, they will have a week-long series of special television events celebrating his legacy and how equality has played out in sports.  The week of tribute will begin tomorrow, but is highlighted by a two-hour panel discussion about the image of the black athlete Friday and will feature Coach Cal as one of the panelists.  Robin Roberts will host the discussion, which will feature Spike Lee (the executive producer), Marion Jones and Randy Shannon.  The show will air at 6pm and will take place at New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Here is what Coach Cal had to say about the event on his official site:
“This is a great honor and I’m humbled to have been asked to participate by Spike Lee and the folks at ESPN,” said Coach Calipari, who will fly to Atlanta after practice Friday and return that evening as he prepares for his team’s home game against LSU the following day. “Dr. King’s legacy lives on in everything we do as citizens, coaches and athletes. To be part of such a distinguished panel to commemorate the life and achievements of such an incredible man is something I am grateful for and look forward to participating in.”
