“Scuuuuuuurrrrrtt”Cameron Calhoun

The three-star cornerback from Cincinnati broke neck muscles across the Commonwealth when he announced his commitment to West Virginia, choosing the Mountaineers over the Wildcats. Kentucky was the heavy favorite in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine after he visited Lexington twice in a three-day span last week. Georgia Tech and Boston College were also finalists for Calhoun’s services.

Neal Brown’s recruiting win does not completely leave the Wildcats high and dry. Calhoun is one of a few players at Winton Woods High School in Vince Marrow’s crosshairs. One of the Big Dog’s frequent stomping grounds and the home of Mike Edwards and Chris Oats, Kentucky will push its chips all in on Jermaine Mathews. The Warriors’ other cornerback is rated slightly higher than Calhoun by On3.

Losing football recruits can be painful, and for assistant coaches, personal. This one stings less because its early in the process and the Wildcats have other lines cast at cornerback, like Mathews and Alabama four-star prospect Avery Stuart, who visited last weekend. You also have to respect the hell out of the fake out. I fully anticipated a UK graphic, until WHAM, West Virginia busted through the UK logo. Well done, Mr. Calhoun, and best of luck.

UPDATE

You might be asking yourself: Why did Calhoun feel the need to fake out Kentucky? After speaking with some people around the program, it sounds like his UK graphic was already made, until folks in Lexington asked him to push back his commitment. After all, they don’t want to scare off Mathews, Avery Stuart or South Warren star cornerback Christian Conyer. Vince Marrow said as much in a Tweet not long after the news broke.

Calhoun will likely still make some visits to Lexington this summer. If the Cats like what they see, he could end up using that original UK graphic. Only time will tell. Kentucky is letting its cake bake while pursuing cornerbacks.
