Celebrate responsibly this weekend in Lexington

by:David Jackson03/28/12
President Capilouto and Mayor Jim Gray held a press conference today with members of the Lexington Police and Fire Departments regarding the public safety in Lexington this weekend for the Final Four. The main theme of the press conference was to have fun this weekend, but have fun responsibly. I actually lost count of how many times the word “responsibly” was said today after 12. Nonetheless, it is a good message that should be taken to heart by all ‘Cats fans in order to celebrate #8 safely. Some notes from the conference… - Burn couches at your own risk. The speakers today mentioned celebratory fires 5 different times. Fire Chief Keith Jackson wanted to make everyone aware that if they are caught setting anything on fire they will be arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor. Sounds like Lexington is really ready to crack down on arson so don't say I didn't warn you! - The police are always watching. Police Chief Ronnie Bastin said that there will be a "significant expenditure of overtime for police officers" this weekend in order to deal with the massive crowds and celebrations they anticipate. When asked just how many officers are scheduled to work this weekend, the police department declined to give an exact number but warned, "rest assured, we have plenty." They also plan to have groups of officers at "traditional celebration spots" of the past to keep any riots from breaking out. - Traffic will be a mess this weekend, so drive safely. Speakers informed the crowd that traffic control cops will be on Euclid, Woodland, and the 300 block of Limestone to close off roads and divert traffic starting about an hour before the UK game(s). Parking on those streets will also be prohibited during those times. It's best to get wherever you're going early on and try to avoid driving after the game. - Undercover officers will be planted throughout the bars and restaurants in the downtown area to keep crowds from getting too large for the fire code. If at any time they feel the crowd has swelled to an unsafe number, some patrons will be asked to leave. So like I said, get where you're going early. - Use common sense. Everyone that spoke acknowledged that this weekend could be incredibly fun and special for the entire city as long as people don't do ignorant things. The University doesn't want to bring any negative attention to Lexington that would overshadow what the basketball team has accomplished this year. Kelli Edwards put it best, "We don't want anyone to miss out on all the fun because they went to jail." - There was, however, a silver lining to all of these rules and regulations. The police department sounded like it may have some tolerance for open containers this weekend. When asked about how hard they would be cracking down citizens with open containers, Commander Kelli Edwards said that people "will be dealt with if they are causing a problem."   So BBN, we ask that you all celebrate this weekend responsibly and use your best judgment if you are thinking of doing something borderline stupid. Unless you have been drinking all day, then just ask a police officer. I'm kidding, just don't do it. Go Cats.
