Checking in with some NFL Cats

Can you believe the preseason NFL games start this weekend? Me neither. Training camps are in full swing, and we've rounded up some updates on your favorite former Cats. Randall Cobb, Green Bay According to Yahoo Sports' Brad Evans, Cobb's stellar play during his rookie year has carried over into camp, and he's well on his way to moving up the depth chart:
According to local reports, the second-year wideout has been far and away the most impressive target in Packers camp. He's caught almost everything in sight and amazed onlookers with his route-running ability, shiftiness and blazing speed, prompting Mike McCarthy to devise new schemes to reward the youngster with additional opportunities. Cobb roared out of the gate last year versus New Orleans, scoring two TDs, one on a 32-yard reception, the other on a jaw-dropping 108-yard kickoff return. Sadly, that's where his rookie season peaked. Over the remainder of the season, he managed just 23 receptions for 340 yards and zero scores. However, because Donald Driver has been around since the Woodrow Wilson presidency, it seems likely Cobb will officially overtake the long-toothed slot man in short order. Aaron Rodgers has a ton of weapons at his disposal, but in an increased role, it's certainly possible the versatile product could develop into a poor man's Percy Harvin, netting touches in variable ways (e.g. receptions, kick returns, handoffs).
That's awesome, but why did they give his bobblehead (or, should I say, Cobblehead!) a neck brace? Wesley Woodyard, Denver With starting linebacker D.J. Williams facing at least a six-game suspension due to drugs and drunk driving, both Wesley Woodyard and Danny Trevathan are fighting for the spot, with Woodyard getting first dibs according to reports out of Denver. Woodyard is coming off his best season ever, with career highs in tackles (97), starts (seven) and forced fumbles (two). He played his way into the starting lineup in several spots, but with more impressive performances in practice and preseason games, will remain atop the depth chart in Williams' spot unless Nate Irving or Danny Trevathan beat him out. DL Coach Richard Smith:
"He's a veteran guy, he's done it before. So, on the depth chart he's penciled in there right now at No. 1. But these things are evaluated not only in practice but in games. So, we've got enough preseason games to find out who's going to be the starter at that position."
Danny Trevathan, Denver Trevathan is currently the only rookie getting work with the starters as the Broncos figure out how to manage without D.J. Williams. While Woodyard is the favorite to take Williams' spot, the Broncos are also trying out Trevathan and middle linebacker Joe Mays in the nickel package. Trevathan told the Denver media that
"Those older guys are always going to be behind us to help us with whatever we need, even D.J. D.J. is a guy that has really been helping me. We play the same position. So, it's been a real blessing to have that guy behind me. He told me, 'You just have to play ball out there. You have to be your own guy. There are going to be guys that can read you, but you have to be able to nitpick the quarterback.'"
Thanks for making us proud, guys.
