Clint Eastwood and Colin Farrell's News and Views

by:Corey Nichols05/30/14
ClintEastwoodColinFarrell How appropriate is it that two of the silver screen's most masculine legends share a birthday?  The "tough-guy" trope that Eastwood invented in movies like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Dirty Harry, Colin Farrell perfected in absolute classics: DaredevilThe Recruit, and S.W.A.T., (the last of which he spent competing against the scene-stealing L.L. Cool J).  If Martin Scorsese wants to call Leonardo DiCaprio the next generation's Robert DeNiro, today's shared birthday answers the question of who will fill the role of the modern Eastwood. Seriously though, S.W.A.T. had its shortcomings (or more correctly, didn't actually have any long-comings), but Farrell was great as a furloughed hitman in the underrated In Bruges.  Happy Birthday(s) to a legend-and-a-half. -We start tonight off with some sour news, as the UK baseball team dropped the first game in the regional opener to Kansas, 10-6.  There might have been a case of looking ahead to a possible matchup with Louisville, but this isn't exactly unfamiliar territory for the Cats.  They haven't won the first game of a regional since 1988, according to KSR baseball guru David Mulloy. So where do the Cats go from here?  Well, to the loser's bracket.  While it's not a dream destination, the hope is still alive as they try to recover against the winner of UL/Kent State.  First pitch is tomorrow at noon, and we'll keep you updated throughout. -The women's softball team's having a busy weekend, too, as they finished off an absolute thriller against Alabama with the bases loaded in the 7th.  A dubious-looking double-play at the end cut the dream short too quickly, and the Cats fell 2-0 against Bama.  Rough weekend for the baseball and softball teams, but the double-elimination format means we have more to look forward to. -Moving on from those low points, if anyone can be thankful that the Jacksonville Jaguars are so bad, it's Winston Guy.  While Jacksonville has been the place where established stars like Maurice Jones-Drew go to wallow in irrelevance, it's a great location for a hungry young player looking to get starter's minutes.  And that's exactly what's in store for Guy, who was cut from the best defense in the league (Seattle) for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. -While a former defensive Cat is writing his NFL story, a current one isn't finished making waves in college.  Zadarius Smith, DE, was named one of the SEC's 90 Best Players by dedicated SEC blog Saturday Down South.  He's only had one year on campus so far, and is poised to break out on Stoops' improved defensive unit. -Enes Kanter was on a Turkish cooking show/infomercial.  When we said "Free Enes," that wasn't where we wanted him.  That said, I hope it was for the Time-crowave. -Speaking of time, the SEC is also going to use a 30-second shot clock in exhibition games, like the ACC.  The change will lead to more possessions, and, theoretically, higher-scoring, more exciting games.  With UK's depth next  year?  Let's make a 15-second clock and run everyone to death.  And then change it back to 35 the year after. -Coach Cal normally likes to play his recruiting pretty close to the vest, but his excitement over 2016 guard Tyus Battle apparently spilled over a little bit.  Tyus' dad said that Cal "wants to get involved in recruiting him pretty heavily."  Not only would Battle be a great addition to any class, but the t-shirt ideas basically write themselves.  "Til the Battle is won," anybody? -Neal Brown is "pleased, but not happy" with the QB progress.  In other news, I was "satisfied, but not appeased" by the new X-Men movie, and this chicken pot pie I just made was "tasty, but not scrumptious."  And obviously I'm kidding, X-Men was fantastic.  I liked the parts with the punching and stuff.   We have a softball and a baseball game to look forward to tomorrow, so stick around and we'll have all the info you need.
