Former Kentucky player/coach, Jan Weisberg, named EKU's head baseball coach

Jan Weisberg, who spent 15 years with the Kentucky baseball program as a player and assistant coach, has been named the new head baseball coach at Eastern Kentucky.
EKU broke the news on Saturday that it will bring in Weisberg to lead the Colonels beginning in 2026. He most recently coached Valdosta State University (DII) this past season, leading the Blazers to a 30-22 record and a second-place finish in the Gulf South Conference regular season standings. Weisberg replaces Walt Jones as EKU’s head coach.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for me and my family to join Eastern Kentucky University and the Colonels Athletics family,” Weisberg said in EKU’s press release. “I want to thank President David McFaddin and Kyle Moats for this tremendous opportunity, and for the trust in me to guide the young men in the EKU baseball program.”
Prior to his time at Valdosta State, Weisberg coached Birmingham Southern College for 17 years, including an incredible run to the NCAA Division III College World Series shortly after the school announced it was shutting down after 168 years of operation. He posted an overall record of 544-209-1 (.722) with the Panthers, which included 14 conference championships and two WCS appearances. BSC was the fourth-winningest baseball team in Division III during the 2010s.

Weisberg got his start in college baseball as a player at Kentucky from 1991-92. He was part of the Wildcats’ squad in 1991 that won a then-record 41 games and reached an NCAA Regional. The following year, he recorded what was at the time the fifth-most RBIs (57) in a single season in program history. He graduated from UK in 1993 with an arts degree in economics.
Following his playing days, Wesiberg went on to be an assistant on Kentucky’s staff for 13 seasons (1993-2005) before a one-year stint as head coach of Transylvania University (2006). He then spent the following 17 seasons at Birmingham Southern before the school shut down for good.
If you’re in the Richmond area next week, you can meet Weisberg. His introductory press conference will be held on Wednesday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. ET in the Premium Club located inside Baptist Health Arena.
